Manhattan African-American Rhinoplasty Surgeon Oleh Slupchynskyj, MD

Rhinoplasty for African-American Patients

As the United States becomes more racially and ethnically diverse, the number of African-American patients seeking Cosmetic Surgery, specifically Rhinoplasty (Nose Job Surgery), continues to increase.

The discussion of Cosmetic Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty) for African-American and Ethnic patients brings up many hot-button issues involving race, gender, and conflicting standards of beauty.

Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyj’s African-American and other Ethnic patients admit that while plenty of information about Rhinoplasty is available, they feel most of it is targeted to Caucasian-Americans. There is virtually no comparable literature for African-Americans and people from other Ethnic groups. This creates a serious information gap. While a person of Ethnic descent may not be comfortable with the way her nose looks, a one-size-fits-all nose that isn’t true to her heritage or other facial features is not what she has in mind when contemplating Cosmetic Surgery. It’s imperative that you choose an African-American Rhinoplasty Surgeon who is sensitive to your needs and describe what you can expect before, during and after your African-American Rhinoplasty Surgery.

The aesthetic goals of African American and Ethnic patients are the same as those for non-Ethnic (i.e. Caucasian) patients. Ethnic and African-American patients seek to reverse the signs of aging, reduce or eliminate displeasing features, and have proportionate facial features African-American or Ethnic patients rarely desire to change their appearance to be more European looking. They are not looking to “Westernize” their nose or any facial feature. The simply desire what all my patients do. They want to improve their appearance while maintaining their ethnic features.

With improvements in both surgical technology and social attitudes, more prospective patients of African descent are considering elective Cosmetic Rhinoplasty. Although the motives for such procedures are a subject for debate among some members of the African-American community, the advancements in the procedure itself have made it more appealing for patients who have thought about reshaping and refining their nasal structure. During the consultation process, Dr. Slupchynskyj discusses all these issues with each patient.

African-American Nasal Skin and Structure

The average nose of the African-American patient has some significant differences from the average European nose. Some of those differences include:

  • Thick skin
  • Rounded or oval nostrils
  • Wide, flat nasal bridges
  • Wide, bulbous nasal tips
  • Flared or enlarged nostrils
  • Short, wide columellae
  • Low, short nasal bridges

While the European nose is typically narrower and protrudes more prominently from the face, the African-American nose sits flatter and wider on the face.

Ethnic Nasal Bridge Augmentation

In contrast to the reduction procedures employed on European patients, some Ethnic and African-American patients often benefit from the addition of structuring materials in the nasal bridge. The construction of a more prominent nasal bridge removes the flat, wide appearance and increases the angle of inclination from the root to the tip. Some African-American Rhinoplasty Surgeons opt to use cartilage from other parts of the patient’s body to construct the bridge, while others use hypoallergenic silicone implants. Dr. Slupchynskyj developed his own patented implant, named the SLUPimplant™.

Differences Between Caucasian and African-American Ethnic Nasal Anatomy

Ethnic and African-American noses present several key anatomical differences when compared to the Caucasian nose. Traditional surgical approaches used for Nose Surgery in Caucasian patients are not advanced enough to address these anatomical differences and produce natural looking and desired results while also maintaining ethnicity.

A major difference commonly observed in the African-American/Ethnic nose is increased nostril width. Wide nostrils can sometimes create or contribute to the appearance of an oversized nose that doesn’t enhance Facial Harmony. Nostril narrowing helps to balance the nostrils with the rest of the nose, eyes and entire face. Dr. Slupchynskyj has developed an extremely advanced, specialized two-fold approach to nostril narrowing surgery that achieves a much more natural-looking and smaller nostril in African-American and Ethnic patients. Dr. Slupchynskyj narrows the nostril from the horizontal and vertical aspects while maintaining the natural curve of the nostril where it meets the face, creating a superior result in the African-American/Ethnic nose, while preserving ethnicity of the nose and face.
